Junior Tennis Club Championship Success
Over the weekend Tennis Gear hosted their Hot Shots Tennis Junior Club Championships at the Shaw Park Tennis Centre, located on Brisbane’s Northside. The championships boasted a large number of players from all Tennis Gear locations including those enrolled in school tennis programs, Hot Shots tennis lessons and squad tennis programs. A special mention has to go to every tennis player for getting involved. Competing at this level is all about having fun and this was certainly evident over the day.
The day began with Tennis Gear’s youngest competitors in the Hot Shots Red Ball category. Using a timed round robin format each red ball tennis player competed in at least three matches. Big congratulations must go to Tennis Gear’s Red Ball Champion, Jack Riley and Runner Up, James McFarlane.
Next up the Hot Shots Orange Ball tennis players took the court, and what fierce competition that was! Each player competed in at least four matches, first to three games. After a nail-biting final, coming down to a sudden death deciding point, Madison Waugh emerged the 2014 Orange Ball Champion and Runner Up, John Morrissey.
Tennis Gear’s Green Ball players followed suit, with some of the closest matches of the day. A very competitive final between two friends was the most outstanding match displaying both high quality tennis and sportsmanship. Backing up his sister’s win, Benjamin Waugh came through as the 2014 Green Ball Champion and Oliver DePasquale, Runner Up.
Finally, our Junior Tennis Squad players in the 12’s and 14’s took the court. The round robin format saw all players have a minimum of three matches, first to four games. Our toughest tennis players formed this group, with players continuing to play through the pains of sore wrists, ankles and exhaustion. In yet another close final, Zak Paulik was victorious as the 12&U Champion and Will Barnes as Runner Up. An unpredictable final between two brothers saw Bogdan Lujic crowned the 14&U Champion and Lazar Lujic, Runner Up.
Tennis Gear would like to thank all the parents who helped out, especially with the younger players, in making the day run smoothly. It was especially encouraging seeing the parents on the court playing with their kids as a warm up and for fun on the mini courts. What a great way to help their tennis development!
Special thanks has to go to the Shaw Park “Club” for running the BBQ throughout the day. These events cannot go ahead without your support!
