An extremely successful event took place on the first Sunday of June at Shaw Park Tennis Centre. Over 120 people competed in a grueling war of wits, skill and fitness to secure their name on Shaw Park’s Championship Board. There were thrills, spills and the occasional shout but with over 10 hours of tennis played there were smiles all round!

I was lucky enough to be able to walk around the courts and meet the players as well as watch some amazing rallies and ridiculous shot making. Reggie Cabusog and Masako Yoshino had some fantastic rallies in the B Grade singles out on Court 9. At the same time, Benita Smith was able to execute some great shots to take the victory over Owen Morgan in the A Grade singles rubber on the next court over.
Further down we saw some exciting Open Grade singles matches that included top class hitting across the division. Jonnie Bell was under pressure early against Darryl Evertson but managed to find the win through some great shot making. Next court over saw Taylor Madgwick and Jamie Mason battle it out in a tight 4 game set that saw Taylor take the win with a consistent baseline game.
It wasn’t just adults that were playing out of their skin, the parent/child event saw some fierce competition take place with the kids putting in 110% in every match. The parents seemed to be the ones taking the orders on the court as they tried to keep up with some of the up and coming juniors here at Shaw Park. A fantastic event that was a delight to watch and loads of fun for the kids as well as mum and dad.
Overall, it was a fantastic day made possible by all those who attended and played as well as the Committee who took care of the BBQ and food preparation. With loads of prizes, trophies and awards given out on the day the 2014 Club Championships was definitely a day to remember. Shaw Park would like to thank all those who attended and made the day a success, we eagerly await next year to do it again!
